This past Wednesday was a major change in scenery for MktSoc, as our event was in a room two floors above the usual! Exciting!
USWIB co-sponsored, and Womenkind, a marketing agency that focuses on women, came in to speak to us about the pitch process that every agency must work through in order to get hired by new clients. Except there was a twist here--Womenkind had recently been featured on reality TV! Specifically, they were on AMC's The Pitch, competing to work for C Wonder. As a result, they had lots of detailed footage from the cameras which followed them aggressively through the process.
I found their presentation to be extremely compelling. Womenkind shared their pitch process like a story, with several clips from the show interspersed with their own commentary. In the end, it was disappointing to find out that C Wonder went with another, seemingly inferior agency, but we learned a lot of smart tips along the way, such as the benefits of coming up with bad ideas over coming up with nothing, and the importance hiding all unfinished ideas from the client.
Overall, this event was a truly engaging and education experience. But did it really make me want to work for an agency? After seeing all the crazy hard work that went into a single pitch, and the no-pay, no-reward result...mayyyybe not.
