First off, let’s congratulate our new Executive Committee for the 2015-2016 school year:

But we still have half of a semester left with Jacqueline, Fran, and Kathy so let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
In addition to our elections, we had Natalie, Fran’s former boss, come in and talk to us about MKG, an experiential marketing agency. At MKG, to make effective and creative ads, the agency has to “determine the relationship between brand and consumer and search for the best way to tell that story”. In MKG’s opinion ‘good ads’ are not about the product but rather the brand and the impact it makes. She showed us a clip from a Ted Talk featuring Simon Sinek who talked about how great leaders inspire action.
Before going to work at MKG, she graduated from college and went to work at Saatchi and Saatchi, specifically on the Derek Coleman Duracell ad that was shown at the 2014 Superbowl. If you want to watch it again here it is! It’s a pretty amazing ad.
Currently at MKG, Natalie’s role is difficult to define. Every brand and story changes with each client. She interacts with all teams and works with the clients, seeing projects from the beginning to the end product. As an Account Manager, she also takes on the strategy role, giving direction to Creative. Creative then figures out the best ideas to tell the story the clients want. Most people on the Creative team have a background in Copywriting or Art Directing. The idea then goes to the Producer who executes it. They are the ones that make ads happen. It takes many hands to complete one project so being at MKG means spending a lot of time with your colleagues.
Natalie brought along some of her advice on how to make it in the Ad Agency world:
1. It’s all about who you meet
2. Be patient
3. Read the trades
5. Be your brand: you are your first client so sell yourself
There are some internship opportunities! In an internship at MKG, you are paired with someone in a department and you essentially shadow them. There are openings in Creative, Account, Design, Production, and possibly Marketing. So go email Natalie your resume!
