Where did you study abroad? Why did you chose that city?
I studied abroad in Shanghai during the fall semester of my sophomore year because I wanted to familiarize myself with the city where my parents grew up, and I wanted the opportunity to be able to see my relatives who live there. Shanghai is also a really important place for business, so I wanted to see how it would be different from the Big Apple!
What classes did you take?
I took Intro to Marketing, Journalism, OrgComm, and Chinese! Our Marketing class mainly focused on Asian companies from China and Hong Kong, such as Alibaba and SK-II, as well as the presence of American companies in China, like Centrium.
What seemed to be trending in your city?
A song called “Xiao Ping Guo” (“Little Apple”) was going viral all around the country, and it was really popular with the senior citizens who participate in what translates literally into “public square dancing.” It was pretty normal to see large groups of elderly ladies dancing to the song in sync all around Shanghai.
Did you see any cool ads?
Haagen Dazs is considered an extremely luxurious brand in China, so prices for its ice cream are around five times higher than those in the US! During the Mid-Autumn festival, Haagen Dazs sold ice cream mooncakes, which is reflective of the Chinese tradition of gift-giving. Kim Soo Hyun, a Korean actor who became popular for his role in the drama, “My Love From the Star,” became the face of the 2014 ad. I thought it was extremely interesting to see how well Haagen Dazs understood its target demographic in Asia.
