Where did you study abroad? Why did you chose that city?
I studied abroad in Sydney, Australia during the Fall 2014 semester and chose it because it seemed so mysterious and full of adventure. I feel like Americans in general don't really know that much about Australia, so I wanted to see what it was like. Also, since it's so far, it isn't an everyday tourist destination, so I thought, "Since it's so far, why not go and stay for 4 months?"
What classes did you take?
I took Intro to Marketing, Foundations of Finance, Social Psychology, and Child and Adolescent Psychopathology
What seemed to be trending in your city?
Health and fitness is huge in Australia; the gym and yoga culture are very trendy. Power foods like smoothies, juices, and acai bowls are popular everywhere you go, and there's also a lot of organic food stores. Also, although one wouldn't immediately associate Australia with good food, brunch is actually a huge thing. There were so many amazing spots in Sydney as well as Melbourne that would beat an NYC brunch any day!
What were some cool ads you saw?
The one ad that stood out to me was an ad for a nation-wide Australian "barbie" (barbecue)...even though I still don't know what it was for. In our Intro to Marketing class, we also worked a lot with Vegemite and saw how the brand and its ads evolved over time.
Advice for students looking to study abroad
Don't expect anything and go with an open heart! I didn't know what to expect in Australia at all and ended up soaking up so many little, detailed things about their culture. After completely falling in love, I would definitely settle down and live in Sydney in the future if I get the opportunity to!
