Today MktSoc hosted an event featuring three people (one of whom is an NYU Alum) from Macys.com, talking about buying and planning for the e-retailer's bedding department.
After Bonnie's introductions, they discussed various techniques and analytics they use to highlight various parts of their website for the buyer and to track the effectiveness of their marketing. Coming in to this event knowing next to nothing about the e-commerce industry, it was interesting for me to hear about the kinds of constant adjustments they make to the site to optimize the user's experience which in turn ideally leads to more conversions.
It was also interesting to note how they don't want to focus only on either the physical stores or the online store, but rather they are constantly encouraging people to shop both online and in the brick-and-mortar stores, creating a synergy effect.
The presenters were very engaging, asking questions, and at one point giving away a $25 Macy's giftcard! They then proceeded to describe their amazing summer internship program, and concluded by answering the many interesting questions the audience had. Overall, the event was very educational, interesting, and valuable for anyone looking for more information on opportunities and careers in the e-retail industry!
